Bicycle Commuting For Better Health

Not To Mention A Lower Gasoline Bill!

Tom Stormcrowe

Now that Spring is just around the corner, I think it's time to consider bicycle commuting to school or work. There are several advantages to this!

  • Exercise

  • Slimmer waist line

  • It doesn't cost $2.31 a gallon to operate a bike

  • The only greenhouse gases you produce are from eating beans!

You don't have to have the most expensive carbon framed racer to enjoy the commute either, as a matter of fact, all you really need is a basic bike! I personally ride what is referred to as an Urban Commuter. Basically, it's a mountain bike with flat handlebars and a rack on the back. I use a street tire called a commuter, which is reinforced with Kevlar®.

The joys of cycle commuting are manifold, with benefits such as just plain time. You can get into your own head on the ride, it gives you time to think. This is a precious commodity in these fast moving times. You have time to get over being mad at the boss on your way home. The family dog will definitely thank you for this!

Your spouse will notice the tighter muscle tone, and will appreciate the new view! Your coworkers will probably think you are nuts, but if you think about it, who's the one that is nuts? The person getting the benefits of the exercise, as well as the stress reduction? Or is it the person trapped in a steel box rushing to get to work, scarfing down a donut and coffee while driving, cussing at the other drivers, while balancing the cellphone in one hand, the donuts and coffee in the other, driving with their knees? Which one of these are you? Which one would you like to be?

Dan -- Trek makes a police special which allows for riding in body armor and a gun.  You can ride in Uniform to work and still do yoour job -- I ride three days a week now -- nine miles each way in my work clothes ...

All good points.  I commute as often as I can.  It mostly depends on babysitting.  If I have to take the youngest to the sitter, I can't ride.  My commute is only 5 miles each way and  yes, the people who work for me think I am crazy.  I have to lock my bike to the fence instead of a bike rack.  I ride a mid 90's MTB with road freindly tires on it.  Works out great until I want to off road with it.  Lose some traction on the trails, but the commute is much better.

Cool, understood! Well, be carefull at your job, and I wish you all the safety in the world. Sometimes, it's just not possible to commute! I have your miles and if you get more in by the end of the day, as long as I have them before I post the graphs on Monday, no problem at all! Keep pedalin'!

I would, Tom, except that my boss requires me to arrive in uniform. This involves body armour and firearm as well. I have to unlock the building in the morning so it is not like there is anyone around to cover my back. That is why I have to arrive prepared. Unfortunately, there are also no telephone booths around for me to change into my superhero outfit. I will probably just ride around the neighborhood in the morning and then go to work when the weather is a little better.

Miles for the week: 52.5 (I may get another ride in later today. It may get quite nice out!)

FFC, no worse than mine! ::GRIN:: UncaDan, consider a messenger bag, arrive in cycling clothes and change in the bathroom!

I still have to figure out how I am going to do the commuting ride. My employer requires me to arrive at work in full uniform, which means riding the bike in is a bit difficult. The resulting odor would also be rather offensive, and sweat stains are unsightly. I am still going to think of something though.

You could smell my desperation for getting out and riding, couldn't you? lol

I need to buy a helmet (maybe I'll do that this weekend) and find the best/safest route to my work and I'll be there!

Good points on all counts... I think employers and schools should encourage bike commuting by having bike racks available everywhere. Also when commuting via bike, you may sweat... which is easily solved by a quick freshen up - Dove makes wet wipes - a couple quick swipes and you are good as new. Of course some axe helps.
Do you mind my asking how much the tires with Kevlar cost? I would think they would be pretty pricey, but I bet you've never had a flat, eh?

We would all be a lot more healthy....and our enviroment would benefit from it too. I know a lot of people who will take the car down to the convinience store less than a block away just because they can....and because they're lazy. My sister is one of them.
