Recovery Food, ETC.

Today, I'd like to talk about recovery food. After a long ride, you need to recharge the glycogen in your muscles. One place I've found for great recovery food recipes is My Swedish Kitchen. It's at http://www.awfulsouls.com/food/ and is chock full of great Swedish and English recipes. Christa also put up some vegetarion recipes, like Samosas. She also has a rice pudding recipe that will absolutely knock your socks off!

The nice thing about recovery food is that it's rich and it just plain tastes good!

Quote of the Day

The quote of the day is from Machka, over at Bike Forums. Machka rides more miles in a single ride than a large percentage of the cyclists on the planet (individually). She does Brevets, or Randoneuring.

What's randoneuring you ask? It's a race, the biggest of which is the Paris-Brest-Paris race.

To the drivers ...

1. Bicycles are vehicles of the road too ... just like motorized vehicles. We have the same right to be there as you do.

2. It is illegal to ride on the sidewalks (in many places) so telling us to get off the road and ride on the sidewalk shows your ignorance of the local law.

3. We're traveling faster than you think. So when you decide to make that right turn in front of us, we might be practically under your wheels.

4. If all the cyclists drove vehicles, the roads would be in worse condition than they currently are. We're doing our part to help make your drive just a little bit more enjoyable, and are also saving you (as a tax payer) a little bit of money.

5. You jog or go to the gym to stay fit. We cycle. We don't go to the gym and throw things at you, why should you throw things at us?

6. Cyclists come from a wide range of backgrounds and employment. The cyclist you cut off or throw something at might be your lawyer, your doctor, your plumber, your accountant, your co-worker, the receptionist at your architect's office, your child's teacher, the mother of your child's best friend ..... do you really want to injure or kill that person?

Tour de Cure

And it's time for my plea for donations again. As I've mentioned before, I've entered the Tour de Cure. This is being an event run all over the US and the Indiana Event is at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 14th. My site with the Tour de Cure organization is http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?pg=personal&fr_id=4373&px=3127592

It's a Verisign Secure site, and I never see your information. Join my honor role and donate any amount! I don't care if it's $10.00 or $10,000.00. Actually, the $10,000.00 amount sounds pretty good, but isn't real likely, but it'd be nice!

Cyclists from across the country will test their mettle on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as they compete in a 10-lap, 25-mile race against the clock in Discovery Channel’s “Race to Replace” on Saturday, Aug. 12.

The fastest rider of the day will be crowned Race to Replace Champion and race as an honorary member of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team (DCPCT) for one day in the U.S. Pro Championships on Sept. 1-3 in Greenville, S.C.

Fans and cycling enthusiasts can ride a lap around the famous 2.5-mile oval led by seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.

Following the lap, guests will enjoy a free concert by the hit rock band Collective Soul. The public lap is open to everyone age 13 and older. Children age 13-18 must have their parent or guardian sign a waiver allowing them to participate.

Admission is free, and donations to the Lance Armstrong Foundation will be accepted. All proceeds from the race, including entry fees from cyclists and donations from fans, will be donated to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, an organization founded by cancer survivor Armstrong to inspire and empower the 1.3 million Americans who are diagnosed with cancer each year, and the Indiana University Cancer Center.

The “Race to Replace” will mark the second appearance of the year by Armstrong at IMS, as he drove the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Pace Car at the 90th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 28.

“We’re very excited about the ‘Race to Replace’ coming to IMS,” said Joie Chitwood, IMS president and chief operating officer. “We’re happy to welcome the legendary Lance Armstrong and many cyclists, their families, friends and fans for a historic day at the track that will be memorable and fun for everyone, especially the winner. But this is also about sending a sizable check to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the IU Cancer Center.”

Armstrong won his seventh and final Tour de France title in July 2005 as the team leader of the Discovery Channel team, retiring as a pro rider after the race.

The “Race to Replace” schedule Saturday at IMS:

6 a.m. Public gate opens, enter via Gate 2 off 16th Street; parking in Turn 1 infield

7 a.m. “Race to Replace” begins

1 p.m. Autograph session in Pagoda Plaza with Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team riders Fumy Beppu, Roger Hammond and Jurgen Van Den Broeck

2 p.m. Lap Led by Lance (must be age 13 or older and wear a helmet)

3 p.m. Awards ceremony with Lance Armstrong and winners, Pagoda Plaza

3:30 p.m. Collective Soul concert, Pagoda Plaza

Here are some of MrsStormcrowes Recipes (With her permission)

I was trying to think of a post and with the plethora of recipes posted haround the blogs recently, I though of some of my favorites! Especially the "GUILT FREE" Cheesecake!

GREEK MEAT PIE
1 lb. ground beef chuck, lean
1 lb. ground lamb, lean
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 onions, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon oregano, crushed
1 cup tomato sauce
pinch of cinnamon
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup butter, melted
12 sheets Phyllo pastry
In a skillet, saute ground meat in olive oil with onions until browned. Season with salt, oregano and pepper. Add tomato sauce, cinnamon.
In a small bowl, beat eggs and stir in cheese. When ground meat has cooled, fold in the eggs and cheese mixture.
Butter a 9x13 inch baking pan. Arrange six sheets of Phyllo pastry on bottom of pan, buttering each sheet. Spread a layer of cooled meat mixture evenly on Phyllo. Cover with remaining six sheets, brushing each with melted butter.
Trim edges of Phyllo to fit pan with a sharp knife. Slice through top of pastry to form diamond shapes.
Bake in a preheated 350°F oven until pastry is golden crisp.
May be served hot or cold.

LOW-FAT SHRIMP DISH
1 bottle Healthy Sensation no fat Italian dressing
1/3 c. Worcestershire sauce
3 tbsp. chopped garlic
1 tbsp. Molly McButter
1 tsp. Tony's salt-free seasoning
Pinch of sugar
1/3 c. skim Pet milk (optional)
1 qt. peeled raw shrimp
1 sm. pkg. cooked shell or wagon wheel pasta
Butter-flavored Pam
1 c. chopped green onions
Spray a large coated skillet with Pam. Add first 6 ingredients. Simmer until bubbling. (Add milk if desired.) Add shrimp. Cook 10 minutes on low heat (bubbling). Add green onions and then cooked pasta. Heat for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Serve.

SUGAR AND FAT FREE OATMEAL COOKIES
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. soda
1 1/2 c. quick cooking oats
2 egg whites, slightly beaten
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. oil
1/2 c. skim milk
1 c. raisins
4 level measuring spoons of Sweet and Low brown sugar substitute (spoon included in box of sweet and low)
Sift together flour, soda, cinnamon and brown sugar substitute. Stir in oats. Combine egg whites, oil, milk, vanilla and raisins and add to flour mixture. Mix well. Drop batter (1 teaspoon) on lightly oiled cookie sheet. Bake 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, depending on texture desired. Shorter baking time results in a chewy soft cookie, the longer time in a crisp cookie.

FAT FREE - SUGAR FREE CHEESE CAKE
Make graham cracker crust in usual way, omitting sugar. Cool in refrigerator while making filling.
FILLING:
1 (24 oz.) carton of fat free cottage cheese
1 box sugar free lemon Jello (4 serving size)
Put cottage cheese in blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Sprinkle lemon Jello over smooth cottage cheese and mix until well blended. Pour into graham cracker crust (9 inch). Refrigerate for 4 hours before serving

Use these with MrsStormcrowes compliments!

Coffee and bike touring.......

This is an open question. I need suggestions on the best way to brew coffee in the morning while bicycle touring. Consider it backpacking on wheels. I DETEST instant coffee, what can I say, I got hooked on good coffee! I'm not sure whether I andm going to use a Cofee press brewing system or an old fashioned espresso pot(Italian style). Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to keep my gear load down under 50 pounds including tent, sleeping bag and all. I will be touring unsupported by a SAG wagon, and this will actually be the first unsupported ride ever! When I toured when I was younger, I toured close around and light(Teenage tours) and tghe most I ever carried was a tarp and a sleeping bag within 50 miles of the house. Over Spring Break, I'm doing a shakedown ride of 256 miles here in Indiana, and over the summer is the big one!

Gear List so far:
Handlebar bag
Rack Trunk
1 set panniers(Coming soon from Banjo Brothers I hope!)
1 backpacking Stove(Sterno or Magic Fuel)
1 Cook Kit(Backpacking)
Tent(Backpacking)
Sleeping Bag
Air Mat

Raingear
3 changes of clothes(synthetic materials)
6 prs socks
cycling shoes
1 pr SOFT camp moccasins
I'll be carrying 1-2 days food at a time
1 First Aid Kit
Sunscreen
extra Glasses
2 spare tubes
15mm wrench and multitool/tire levers, pliers
Pump
Can anyone think of things I've missed other than toilet paper or camp wash and other hygiene items?

Gear I can't find:
Wind up or solar cell phone charger

Suggestions?
